Since her move to MediaCorp TV in January this year, Malaysian actress Apple Hong has been ‘promoted’ to a High-Class Beauty. With this distinction, she has a huge wardrobe of the fanciest clothes and accessories available at her disposal. And her job is simply to watch the latest fashion trends!Sounds too good to be true? Well, it’s probably because that is Apple’s fictional character in MediaCorp’s new 100-episode drama Tong Xin Yuan! Gao Jimei leads such a cushy life it’s hard to picture it happens in real life.
Who is Gao Jimei?
A girl who has such an abundance of time and money on her hands that her full-time occupation is to look like the impeccably-dressed models in the fashion magazines. But unlike the stereotypical bratty rich girl, Gao Jimei isn’t a dislikeable person.
“The common perception of Gao Jimei is that she’s extremely haughty and that she flaunts her wealth. But to her, she’s just stating an honest fact; she has no proud or malicious intent when she says, ‘I’m very rich, I have millions of dollars.’
“Her fashion sense may seem very over-the-top, but in Tokyo and overseas, it’s actually ok. Most people don’t spend the effort matching their clothes and accessories head to toe, but Gao Jimei has so much free time, she looks like a model who walked straight out of a fashion catalogue.”
Gao Jimei - the pirated version of Taiwan’s controversial ‘celebrity’ Xu Chunmei?
Bright lipstick, hats and laughably frilly and garish sense of dressing… that certainly brings to mind the larger-than-life Taiwanese celebrity Xu Chunmei. Is Gao Jimei a conscious reproduction of the former?
Apple clarifies with us, “Initially, the crew told me to be like Xu Chunmei, and I wondered, should I ‘ugly-fy’ myself or be comedic? In actuality, Gao Jimei is actually quite a likeable girl, although sometimes it appears she’s an airhead. I was real relieved when they told me I don’t have to imitate Xu Chunmei! Imagine if I have to impersonate her for a year! By that time, she could be passé already.
“The only ways I’m like Xu Chunmei is we both speak matter-of-factly about our wealth, and our fashion senses are exaggerated.”
Difficulty
From wearing old, androgynous baggy pants and messily clipped hair in Gong Xi Fa Cai, to looking like she just walked out of Harper’s Bazaar in Tong Xin Yuan, Apple is so thrilled she has absolutely no complaints! But filming a 100-episode drama means one full year will be spent on it and that no doubt requires some careful planning.
Thus, Apple’s challenge will be to let Gao Jimei become deeply imprinted in the audience’s minds but they won’t get tired of her too. She says, “Finding the direction in the beginning will be the toughest. But the process will be smooth once I get the hang of it because the character has become a part of me. In fact, I wonder if over time, I’ll really become Gao Jimei!”
If Apple gets more product endorsements like she wish 2005 will bring her, she could just move a few inches to becoming a real-life millionaire like Gao Jimei! But if you do one day see a young lady togged in perfectly-coordinated clothes that seem too exaggerated for our streets, don’t gawk too much. After all, like what Apple claims, it’s actually just commonplace in Tokyo.
